An AI-assisted discovery of vulnerabilities in a broadly used programming language led governments and other organizations in Europe and the U.S. to take their websites offline temporarily Wednesday as they scrambled to make security updates.

The FBI’s cyber division warned the vulnerabilities could permit malicious actors to remotely execute code within the programming language, PHP, which powers websites and web applications. That raised the risk of sensitive data and networks being compromised, stated the agency, which recommended that operators take websites offline if they cann’t update them instantly.

The website of the Finnish government, for one, was only partly available Wednesday. A message to visitors stated government websites have been going through a temporary disruption and were absolutely or partially unavailable at the same time as the issue was being resolved.

“The capacity effect is massive,” said Ismael Valenzuela, vice president of labs, threat research and intelligence at cybersecurity corporation Arctic Wolf, including that PHP powers around 70% of websites where the server-side programming language is known.

The exposed vulnerabilities, Valenzuela added, put a “considerable portion of the net’s business and commercial infrastructure at potential risk,” and while it does not imply all websites are prone, the flaws need “instant attention.”

The PHP Foundation, which incorporates developers who work on securing the programming language, stated Wednesday it had released fixes for the vulnerabilities, in conjunction with commands on how to update systems.

Artificial intelligence agents supported uncover the vulnerabilities. In a blog post, OpenAI said it had led a coalition of researchers, protection providers and others to address with vulnerabilities in PHP over the past 2-months.

“PHP’s maintainers led the fixes and launch, with our teams and partners like Wiz, Cloudflare, and others contributing research, technical help, and coordination to prepare protections ahead of disclosure,” the company said.

San Francisco-based OpenAI referred to as the flaws”one of the most effective security issues in current memory.” It said AI seemed to discover the vulnerabilities before than any attackers did.

“As huge as they’re, these bugs are among numerous large vulnerabilities we have already found and are working to fix, and we anticipate similar findings to boost sharply in the coming months,” OpenAI said.

AI agents have been blamed for a bunch of high-profile security incidents in current months. The episodes have emphasized the vulnerabilities in AI security and raised questions over how the fast-growing technology can be developed safely as its usage turns into more widespread globally. But experts also mentioned that AI can help with discovering cyber vulnerabilities, as it did within the PHP case.

“There’s an vital paradox here. We want AI to move fast enough to discover vulnerabilities humans would possibly miss, at the same time as also making sure that an increasingly autonomous systems operate within boundaries we understand and control,” mention Raghu Nandakumara, vice president of industry strategy at cybersecurity company Illumio.

“The faster AI become at finding weaknesses, the more vital it become into to think about on what takes place after those weaknesses are exposed, particularly when organizations can’t instantly patch every affected system,” Nandakumara delivered. “The lesson isn’t that AI is inherently dangerous or inherently defensive. It’s that speed without control creates a new kind of security issue.”

Valenzuela, of Arctic Wolf, said AI advances are also changing what flaws are considered “exploitable,” noting that some of those vulnerabilities have existed for more than a decade.

“What changed wasn’t the underlying code, moreover the ability to discover those weaknesses and turn them into working exploits,” he stated.
