ChatGPT maker OpenAI and an Australian data center operator have approved to built a multibillion-dollar AI center in Sydney.

Brisbane-based NextDC stated on Friday it signed a memorandum of understanding with OpenAI to form an artificial intelligence campus and a “supercluster” of graphics processing units.

The 2-corporations will collaborate on making plans, evolution and operation of the AI infrastructure partnership in western Sydney, NextDC stated in a assertion.

NextDC shares had been up 4.1% in early afternoon trade.

Australia’s authorities said the Aus$7 billion (US$4.6 billion) development would form lots of direct and indirect jobs for the duration of its construction, and ongoing technical, production, engineering and operational roles.

The venture would use long-term power buy agreements for new renewable energy assets and “next generation” functions not needing drinking water for cooling, the government stated.

“It’s more proof Australia has the talent, clean energy ability, trade partnerships, and policy settings required to be one of the huge winners when it comes to AI,” stated Treasurer Jim Chalmers.

“Partnerships like these will support create good jobs, enhance skills, and spread AI adoption throughout our economy.”
