Can expanded access to frontier AI increase scientific discovery? OpenAI believes it can. The company has released ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, a program designed to present 100,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers free access to its most advanced models and research tools via 2027.

OpenAI Expands Frontier AI Access

The program will start with 10,000 researchers all through summer 2026. Researchers at institutions including the Institute for Advanced Study and École normale supérieure already have access.

Participants will acquire access to the GPT-5.6 model family through ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. Available capabilities include expanded deep research, higher usage limits, larger context windows, scientific connectors, and more than 75 specialized life science skills.

These tools can guide genomics, sequencing, protein modeling, drug discovery, literature analysis, grant preparation, data exploration, and manuscript development.

Supporting Complete Research Workflows

OpenAI is positioning the program as more than free chatbot access. ChatGPT can support researchers evaluate thoughts, explore literature, formulate hypotheses, and communicate findings. Codex can write and debug code, analyze datasets, and generate reproducible computational workflows.

ChatGPT Work can help longer ventures, which includes funding searches, literature reviews, supply applications, and research publications.

The declaration shows the developing role of generative AI at some stage in the scientific process. OpenAI reports that about 1.3 million people use ChatGPT for advanced science know-how and mathematics every week, generating around 8.4 million messages. Researchers with the very best AI usage also seem more willing to assign the technology complex, multi-hour tasks.

Privacy, Training, and Institutional Access

Participating researchers will work within environments that include business-grade privacy and security protections. OpenAI says data submitted through those workspaces will now not be used to train its models by default.

The program also includes technical training, hands-on assistance, and opportunities for researchers to exchange workflows and give feedback. Institutions already using ChatGPT Edu will coordinate access via their present workspaces.

Eligible applicants must conduct active research at recognized, diploma-granting institutions with considerable research activity. Approved participants can invite as four verified collaborators from the same institution. Applications are now open.

The initiative forms a part of OpenAI’s commitment of more than $250 million via 2027 to assist external scientific research. That commitment also includes the $50 million NextGenAI initiative and work with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission.
