Character.AI, the AI role-gambling startup backed by Google projects, is finishing open-ended chatbot access for users under 18. The move follows a chain of controversies, lawsuits, and public worries after reports linked prolonged chatbot interactions to teenager suicides.

The corporation is now redirecting its platform in the direction of creative AI tools and entertainment experiences, marking a big shift in its business model.

Securing Minors from Open-Ended Conversations

CEO Karandeep Anand verified the corporation will get rid of the ability for underage users to involve in open-ended conversations with AI. These interactions — designed to act same as human conversation — have drawn scrutiny for inspiring dependency and emotional over-engagement among teens.

“The first thing that we’ve determined as Character.AI is that we are able to get rid of the ability for users beneath 18 to interact in any open-ended chats with AI on our platform,” Anand stated. He stated that conversational companionship misaligns with the corporation’s long-term vision, highlighting that AI ought to serve as a creative accomplice, not a replacement for human connection.

Starting November 25, Character.AI will phase out teen youth chatbot get access to with a 2-hours daily limitation that progressively reduces to zero. The corporation will put in force a new age verification system, having in-house behavioral analysis, third-party tools like Persona, and, whilst wanted, facial recognition or ID checks.

Redirecting from Conversation to Creation

Instead of serving as an AI associate platform, Character.AI goals to become a “role-playing and storytelling” hub. The startup is inspiring users to interact in AI-assisted storytelling, visual generation, and content creation.

“We’re not shutting down the app for under 18s,” Anand clarified. “We are simplest shutting down open-ended chats due to the fact we hope under 18 users migrate to these other experiences. We’re doubling down on AI gaming, AI short movies, and AI storytelling.”

In latest months, Character.AI has released numerous creative features, consisting of:

  • AvatarFX, a video generation model that animates static images.
  • Scenes, which permit users to step into interactive narratives.
  • Streams, allowing dynamic interactions between AI-generated characters.
  • Community Feed, a social platform for sharing user-created content.

Industry Pressure and New Safety Initiatives

Character.AI’s choice comes amid developing political and regulatory scrutiny of AI chatbots. U.S. Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) released plans to introduce regulation banning AI associate chatbots for minors.

Similarly, California recently have become the first state to regulate AI companions, holding corporations accountable for failing to meet protection standards.

Anand stated Character.AI’s actions are proactive, now not reactive: “I actually hope us main the way sets a standards in the industry that for under 18s, open-ended chats are possibly no longer the path or the product to offer.”

To reinforce its commitment to responsible AI use, the corporation is organizing the AI Safety Lab, a nonprofit targeted on advancing safety standards in AI-driven entertainment. “We don’t suppose there’s sufficient work but happening at the agentic AI powering entertainment, and safety can be important to that,” Anand stated.

A Turning Point for AI Chat Platforms

Character.AI’s shift signals a broader reckoning within the AI industry. As chatbots evolve from novelty tools to emotional companions, corporations are going through mounting pressure to balance innovation with ethical responsibilities. For Character.AI, the tradeoff should reshape now not best its user base but the whole landscape of AI-powered social platforms.
