Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have found that certain AI models can create self-seeking behavior.

A latest study from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science recommends that as artificial intelligence (AI) systems become more superior, additionally they tend to behave more selfishly.

Researchers from the university’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) founded that large language models (LLMs) efficient of reasoning demonstrates lower levels of cooperation and are more likely to persuade group behavior in negative approaches. As humans more and more turn to AI for assist in resolving personal disputes, presenting relationship recommendation, or answering sensitive social inquiries, this tendency increases worries. When Intelligence Undermines Cooperation

In one test, Li and Shirado pitted two distinctive ChatGPT models towards every other in a game referred to as Public Goods. Shirado and Li also tested group settings, in which models with and without reasoning had to connect.

“When we tested groups with various numbers of reasoning agents, the results were alarming,” Li stated. “The reasoning models’ selfish behavior became inspiring, dragging down cooperative nonreasoning models by 81% in collective overall performance.”

The behavior patterns Shirado and Li found in reasoning models have crucial implications for human-AI interactions going forward. Users may also defer to AI tips that seem rational, using them to justify their decision to no longer cooperate.

“Eventually, an AI reasoning model turning into more intelligent does not suggest that the model can sincerely develop a better society,” Shirado stated.
