In finance, it often involves balancing access to credit with risk assessment. Because AI systems ought to be formalized mathematically, researchers translate fairness into technical definitions explained by metrics that particularly how results must be allotted across groups.

Decisions about what data to acquire, which targets to optimize, and how systems are deployed are influenced through social and organizational elements. Technical fixes are vital but insufficient. Meaningful approaches need to engage with the broader context in which AI systems perform.
