How is China applying artificial intelligence to modern warfare? The country has introduced an AI-powered strike planning system designed to military commanders prioritize goals, allocate weapons, and coordinate large-scale air operations.

The “intelligent strike planning system” assists commanders and pilots as they analyze potential targets and decide how available aircraft, weapons, and other sources must be deployed, as per the reporting from the South China Morning Post.

Instead of replacing military decision-makers, the system appears designed to increase planning across complicated combat scenarios. Coordinating a major air campaign can need teams to assess goal importance, aircraft availability, weapon compatibility, timing, defenses, and operational risk. AI could process those variables more quickly then conventional planning techniques.

The system’s introduction follows calls from Chinese leader Xi Jinping for the People’s Liberation Army to reinforce its use of unmanned and intelligent technologies.

China has invested heavily in autonomous aircraft, drones, surveillance platforms, and AI-assisted command systems. These technologies should permit military units to acquire intelligence, coordinate operations, and reply to battlefield changes with less delay.

The results of failure, however, are appreciably higher than in most commercial applications. Poor data quality, model drift, adversarial inputs, or unreliable recommendations could impact real-world military decisions.

Global Competition Accelerates

China isn’t alone in incorporating AI into defense systems. The United States has advanced “loyal wingman” aircraft and drones designed to perform alongside crewed platforms. These systems could perform reconnaissance, focusing, communications, or defensive missions while lowering risks to human pilots.

Ukraine and Russia are also evolving autonomous and semi-autonomous systems for operations on land, at sea, and in the air. Drones already play a relevant role in reconnaissance and combat, increasing demand for automated navigation, object recognition, focused on assistance, and coordination.

The wider trend points towards military systems in which human operators supervise networks of AI-enabled machines instead of controlling each platform directly.
